Packing Guidelines: What to Bring on your trip to Europe:
Many people still travel with those giant camping backpacks, but this is not necessary. I always travel with a rolling suitcase with a luggage lock and a smaller backpack. When I stayed in hostels, I would leave all my clothes and less important items in my suitcase, lock it, and put it under my bed. Generally, people leave it alone and there is nothing that important in there anyway. I put all my valuables, such as my passport, wallet, camera, etc., in my backpack and leave that in the locker the hostel provides. This is also beneficial because I have a smaller backpack to take with me for day trips. For me, this worked out the best and I never had anything taken. The roller bag is also easier to carry than a giant backpack. Others still choose to use the enormous camping backpacks and lock that in their locker. It is just a matter of organization and preferences.
In terms of what to bring, try to pack as light as possible. I tried to pack everything I need for one week and would go to a Laundromat when I ran out of clothes. If you are traveling in the warmer months, you have some more room. Bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes, nice shoes to go out in (everyone dresses up at night), jeans, shorts, day shirts, going out shirts, etc. Pack what you would as any other vacation in terms of clothes, but bring nice clothes for going out. It doesn’t matter which country you are in, everyone looks nice when going out. Other things to bring are a passport (never lose this!), driver’s license (if you do not want to carry around your passport as ID when out and about), camera and charger, luggage lock, sunglasses, etc. I personally never brought my laptop, but I have seen people bring them. I never wanted to run the risk of losing it and most hostels have computers there and internet cafés are really cheap, so it’s really not necessary. The less you bring the better off you will be. You will have less to carry and less to keep track of.
